Forbeck Foundation Funded Project Presented at American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO)
Dr. Sue Cohn (University of Chicago, USA) presented a significant update on the International Neuroblastoma Risk Group project at the influential American Society of Clinical Oncology meeting in May 2016. The Forbeck Foundation provided the basis for the International Neuroblastoma Risk Group project by bringing together international experts on Neuroblastoma to develop the optimal way to diagnose and stage the childhood cancer. The outcome of this meeting was the International Neuroblastoma Staging System (INSS), which is employed in many countries. This initiative was necessary as, thankfully, Neuroblastoma is such a rare childhood cancer that is difficult for pediatric oncologists to compare cases and trial results unless they use the same approach.
Over the years, the Forbeck Foundation has funded several meetings to expand and refine the INSS, with the work developing into the International Neuroblastoma Risk Group project. This is a database that is open to everyone working in Neuroblastoma research. Clinicians and researchers can review data on nearly 18,000 patients with the disease. The Foundation has been very supportive of the project and has funded various aspects of this program. The most recent funding from the Forbeck Foundation means that the organization has provided over $500,000 to the INSS and International Neuroblastoma Risk Group project.
Dr. Kemshead, Head of the Forbeck Foundation’s Scientific Advisory Board, said that this is a unique program, which only exists because of Forbeck Foundation’s efforts. In the USA, approximately 700 patients are diagnoses with Neuroblastoma every year. To have access to the database of the 18,000 patients from all over the world enables investigators to study the biological and clinical aspects of the disease in ways that would have been impossible without this program. This program will definitely contribute towards the drive to find a cure for Neuroblastoma.
The Forbeck Foundation continues to fund the International Neuroblastoma Risk Group Project, and donations to help with this important program are welcome.
